UPDATE: Layoffs Coming For Spirit AeroSystems Workers? YES.

UPDATE: 1:20pm

Spirit Aerosystems has confirmed that it is laying off 360 salaried support and management employees in both its Kansas and Oklahoma locations.

The company said in a news release Thursday that this is a "strategic move to make the company more competitive in a cost-sensitive environment." It says the reductions are designed to "reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency, and drive improved performance."

Spirit will offer the terminated employees severance benefits and career transition services.

Union officials are bracing for anticipated layoffs at Spirit AeroSystems, though the company says it won't speculate about the rumors.

Ray Goforth, with the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, says that the union is hearing from various middle managers about impending layoffs. He says the company has not told union officials about them.

Though Spirit says it has no announcements to make, a company email shows that the human resources department has blocked off 35 rooms from 6:30 a.m. to noon Thursday for the meetings.
