The Wichita State University School of Performing Arts presents Guys and Dolls November 7-10 at Wilner Auditorium. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, this classic musical has been a favorite of audiences since it opened on Broadway in 1950. With an immortal score by Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling’s fast-paced book, this romantic comedy is considered the perfect musical comedy by many.
The legendary characters include: Sarah Brown, the uptight “mission doll,” set out to reform Sky Masterson, the high-rolling gambler and Adelaide, the long suffering fiancé of Nathan Detroit and an ensemble of other engaging characters who inhabit this world from Times Square to the cafes of Havana to the sewers of New York. This production is directed by Wayne Bryan.
The Forum Theatre presents The Hound of the Baskervilles, a send-up of Sherlock Holmes stirs an ancient curse, a spectral hound, and a deranged killer into a comedy alive with mystery, suspense, and uproarious fun. Three actors play dozens of roles as the boys of Baker Street face off against the colossal canine of the moors. The production runs October 31 to November 17.
On the horizon for November 20-23 is the Wichita Center For The Arts production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona: The College Years. Shakespeare’s classic comedy is transported from Renaissance Italy to a Midwestern college campus in the 1960s and set to a high-energy rock ‘n’ roll beat. This musical combines the storytelling prowess of the Bard with the hijinks of Animal House and the music of Grease.
