At Play: Cooks, Cakes And The Kingdom Of Spam

Wichita Community Theatre presents The Dixie Swim Club June 6-23. Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of 33 years.

Mosley Street Melodrama presents Tom Frye’s Butch Cassiday & The Can’t Dance Kid or You Polka, You Brought Him May 30 to July 20.

Kechi Playhouse presents You Take The Cake June 6 – 30. This comedy is set in a bakery during prohibition—featuring two gangsters, to lovable vagrants, a cop, and a crazy would-be actress who bakes cakes.

On the horizon for June at Music Theatre of Wichita is Monty Python’s Spamalot. The Tony Award-winning musical is a witty and raucous re-telling of the legend of King Arthur, “lovingly ripped off” from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The Crown Uptown Theatre presents Little Women now through June 8. With period costumes and sets, this production is based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel. Set in 1860s Massachusetts, it is a heart rending tale about the four sisters of the March family, who lose their wealth while the family patriarch is away serving in the Civil War but gain much more. Through the struggles, the sisters still have heaps of fun, make new friends, in the end fall in love, and find out that not everything has to be glamorous.
