A classic from Gilbert and Sullivan, lesser known works from F. Scott Fitzgerald, and an Agatha Christie mystery are all on tap this week.
The Wichita State University College of Fine Arts presents Pirates of Penzance Thursday, October 18-Sunday October 21. One of the most beloved of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, Pirates of Penzance satirizes the operatic convention that traps the hero in conflict between love and duty. Our hero Fredrick has been brought up indentured to a band of Pirates, but being a noble lad, he detests the profession. On turning 21, he announces his intention to become an honest citizen. Confusion and merriment ensue as Fredrick falls for the lovely young Mabel but cannot marry her because of a technicality regarding his age.
Friends University presents Curtains Friday, October 19-Sunday, October 21 with 7:30 performances Friday and Saturday and a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. It’s 1959 and the Boston Colonial Theatre is set to debut a new musical, Robin Hood of the West, only to find their questionably talented leading lady murdered after curtain call on opening night. Much to everyone’s surprise the game is afoot and a murderer is amongst them!
Wichita Community Theatre presents Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap October 18th to Sunday, November 4. WCT will also present three one-act plays by F. Scott Fitzgerald as reader’s theatre on Sunday, October 21 from 2 to 4 p.m.
