Bike Share ICT, which announced in the spring it would expand, is rolling out new bike stations and more than 100 new bikes.

Plans for Bike Share ICT to more than double in size should be complete in the coming weeks.

Two dozen bike stations and 100 new bikes will debut this fall at locations around the city, including Wichita State University, the Sedgwick County Zoo and the Great Plains Nature Center, the city announced.

The bike share program is a collaboration between the city and numerous community partners. To use a bike, riders download the Bike Share ICT app and choose their rental plan. Each bike has a unique number that when entered opens the bike’s lockbox.

Ellen Abbey, WSU’s director of auxiliary services, has been trying to get Bike Share ICT on campus for two years. She remembers receiving a letter from a young girl a year ago asking that Bike Share ICT come to WSU.

“I have framed that letter and have it on my wall to remind me, ‘Don’t give up on this project,’ ” Abbey said. “So yeah, it’s finally going to happen, and I hope to have her here when we do a ribbon-cutting.”

Abbey said she expects many students to use the bikes, but hopes to see the bikes’ impact stretch beyond people already on campus.

“Our hope is that we see more people from the community,” Abbey said.
