Brownback Hopeful Wind Energy Tax Credit Will Be Extended

A wind energy tax credit is set to expire at the end of this year, but Governor Sam Brownback is holding out hope that lawmakers in Washington will extend the credit.

Governor Brownback would prefer to see the credit phased out more slowly, and over several years.

Internal Candidate Named New Executive Vice Chancellor At KU Med Center

The senior associate dean for clinical affairs will soon take over as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Dr. Douglas Girod was selected from among three candidates to fill the position. He replaces Barbara Atkinson, who retired in June.

Girod earned his medical degree in 1985 from the University of California at San Francisco. He completed two residencies and a National Institutes of Health research fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Deferred Maintenance Backlog Down At KS Colleges

The list of needed repairs at Kansas' public universities is declining, thanks to increased spending and low bids from contractors.

KS House Leader Expects Local Elections Debate

Elections Committee Chairman Scott Schwab says lawmakers are likely to debate proposals to change local elections scheduling next year.

Schwab, an Olathe Republican, says there's been House interest in the matter because local elections typically have a low turnout.

He says the Senate has shown little interest in the subject. But that could change, as the 40-member Senate will open the 2013 session with 16 new members.

General elections for city offices and local school boards are usually held the first Tuesday in April in odd-numbered years, with primaries in late February or early March.

Schwab says one proposal is to move local general elections to the first Tuesday in November in odd-numbered years.
