Global Village heads to Brazil this time for music from guitarists Bola Sete, Joao Gilberto, and Rosa Passos, samba-reggae star Margareth Menezes, acclaimed Brazilian jazz group Trio da Paz, banjo master Mike Marshall with Choro Famoso and we remember hit maker Sergio Mendes who passed away in 2024.
Tuesday January 14
SPECIAL: Global Village pays tribute to one of the giants of Crescent City music, Allen Toussaint, on his birthday. The program highlights music from rare albums in the ‘70s to later projects, including the Grammy-nominated release, The River in Reverse, with Elvis Costello. Plus New Orleans R&B classics he wrote and produced for Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey and others, and covers of his songs from Robert Palmer, the Band, the Pointer Sisters, and more.
Wednesday January 15
SPECIAL: Global Village showcases music from one of Mali’s great bands, the Rail Band, and some of the members who went on to influential solo careers, including Salif Keita, Mory Kante, and Djelimady Tounkara. We’ll hear selections from the band in various phases, solo releases, and guest appearances with Eric Bibb and Angelique Kidjo.
Thursday January 16
SPECIAL: Global Village devotes the show this time to brass bands from around the world. We travel to several continents and explore a number of different styles including Balkan brass bands Fanfare Ciocarlia and the Boban and Marko Markovic Orkestar, Japan’s Black Bottom Brass Band, India’s Bollywood Brass Band, Mexico’s Los Rurales, Benin’s Gangbe Brass Band, the Crescent City’s Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and more.

SPECIAL: In conjunction with the January Feature looking back at the past year in world music, Global Village remembers artists who passed away in 2024. We’ll hear selections from kora legend Toumani Diabate, the Waliers’ Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett, Bernice Johnson Reagon of Sweet Honey in the Rock, Algerian pianist Maurice el Medioni, Congolese Rumba guitarist Papa Noel, boogaloo hitmaker Pete Rodriguez, Brazilian star Sergio Mendes, tabla great Zakir Hussain, and more.
