Wichita State University has awarded its most distinguished scholarship to three high school seniors from the Wichita area.

Sarah Buie of Derby, Anna Tri of Andover Central High School and Gehad Qaki of Wichita Collegiate were awarded a Harry Gore Memorial Scholarship on Friday. Each student will receive $64,000 to attend WSU.

The winners were chosen from a pool of 82 semifinalists and later 11 finalists during WSU’s Distinguished Scholarship Invitational.

The Gore Scholarship has been awarded annually since 1954 to incoming freshmen.

Buie, who is homeschooled, plans to study elementary education. She founded the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science Mentor Program.

Tri is interested in studying biomedical engineering. She is president of the Hispanic Honors Society at Andover Central and volunteers at Wesley Medical Center.

Qaki plans to study aerospace engineering at WSU. He is Collegiate’s Student Council president and a member of the Islamic Society of Wichita Youth Leadership Committee.
