The Wichita Police Department says it’s going to increase its recruiting efforts as part of a recommendation made by an organizational assessment released last year.
The assessment from the Hugo Wall School at Wichita State University recommended the department focus on recruiting after it saw a decrease in applicants.
Speaking at the mayor's briefing Thursday, Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said he’d like to see candidates with experience in fields outside of law enforcement.
“For me, I really like focusing on those candidates who are maybe second career candidates, that have done other positions, who have been social workers or teachers or engineers," he said. "They bring a different perspective to policing and look at things through a different lens.”
He says the department is going to use a variety of methods to find new candidates, including social media and online advertising, as well as traditional job fairs.
