Global Village marks International Romani Day with a program devoted to a wide array of Roma artists, including the Gipsy Kings, the ‘King of the Gypsy Violinists’ Roby Lakatos, the ‘Queen of the Gypsies’ Esma Redzepova, some great brass bands – Fanfare Ciocarlia, the Boban and Marko Markovic Orkestar, and the Kocani Orkestar - and more.
Tuesday, April 9
In conjunction with the April Richard Thompson feature, Global Village hosts ‘A Fairport Convention.’ We’ll hear music from Fairport’s early days when Thompson was part of the band, along with music from his solo projects and work with then-wife Linda Thompson – plus music from other Fairport members, including Sandy Denny, Ashley Hutchings (with the Albion Band), Iain Matthews (with Matthews Southern Comfort), and fiddler Dave Swarbrick (with folk great Martin Carthy).
Wednesday, April 10
Global Village marks birthdays of Bunny Wailer (from his early work with the Wailers and later solo work) and exotica hit maker Martin Denny. Plus more from April featured artist Richard Thompson, tributes to the Beat’s Ranking Roger and the TPOK Jazz Band’s Simaro, music from 2019 NEA Jazz Master and South African jazz piano great Abdullah Ibrahim, and the latest from Benin International Musical and Santana.
Thursday, April 11
Global Village highlights vintage and contemporary ska and roots reggae – including music from the legendary ska band, the Skatalites, and from Skatalites band members Jackie Mittoo and Rico Rodriguez (as part of Jazz Jamaica). And there’s roots reggae revivalists Ziggy Marley (with brother Stephen Marley), Jamaica’s Raging Fyah (with Jesse Royal), and Baltimore’s Jah Works.
Friday, April 12
Global Village celebrates the birthday of the legendary Herbie Hancock with the world music side of his work, including music from the globe-spanning Imagine Project, guest appearances with African artists Manu Dibango (of “Soul Makossa” fame) and Foday Musa Suso, and covers of his songs from Mongo Santamaria, Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers, and the Jazz Jamaica All Stars.
