In conjunction with the June Portuguese Music feature, Global Village celebrates Portugal Day with music from Portugal and related countries – including music from Brazil to celebrate the birthday today as well of bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto. Tuesday, June 11

In conjunction with the June Portuguese Music feature, Global Village visits Lusophone Africa – five nations - Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé – where Portuguese is an official language. Among the artists featured: Cape Verde’s Cesaria Evora, Angolan singers Bonga and Waldemar Bastos, Orchestra Marrabenta Star of Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau’s Super Mamba Djombo, and from São Tomé, Africa Negra.

Wednesday, June 12

Traditional African music generally focused on songs of praise, celebration, and special occasions, but in more recent times, artists have incorporated social and political messages into their music as well. This time in the Global Village, we explore some of that music, including Fela’s groundbreaking Afrobeat music, African reggae artists Sonny Okosun, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Lucky Dube and Alpha Blondy, and South African artists Miriam Makeba, the Mahotella Queens, and Hugh Masekela.

Thursday, June 13

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Jorge Santana with music he did as a member of the ‘70s Latin Rock band Malo, with his brother Carlos, and in a guest appearance with the Fania All Stars. Plus music from Dancas Ocultas for the June Music of Portugal feature, and new releases from Japan’s Minyo Crusaders, Lila Downs, Yapunto.

Friday, June 14

Global Village remembers one of the great voices of African music, Papa Wemba, on his birthday. The show features music from Zaiko Langa Langa, a popular group he cofounded and where he first rose to stardom; his acclaimed Viva La Musica lineup; in appearances as a special guest with Manu Dibango and with the Big Blue Ball project from RealWorld; and in covers of his songs from Africando and Juan Luis Guerra.
