Monday, June 10

Night Train marks birthdays of guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg(as a leader and with organist Dr. Lonnie Smith), bassist Charnett Moffett (as a leader, with the General Music Project, and with McCoy Tyner), and from bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto (with Stan Getz, and featured as part of special with daughter Bebel Gilberto in hour two of the show). Plus the latest from trumpeter Etienne Charles and the Canadian band, JV’s Boogaloo Squad.

Tuesday, June 11

Some legendary tenor saxophonists and classic and contemporary organists featured tonight on the Night Train, both separately and together. Among the highlights, guitarist Pat Martino with organist Pat Bianchi, and organists Gregory Lewis, Jimmy McGriff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith as leaders. Plus tenor men Coleman Hawkins, Gene Ammons, John Coltrane (with Thelonious Monk), Stan Getz (with Charlie Byrd from the pioneering Jazz Samba album), and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis (with organist Shirley Scott).

Wednesday, June 12

Night Train celebrates birthdays of two great pianists – the late Geri Allen (with Betty Carter and Charles Lloyd) and Chick Corea (with Return to Forever, Gary Burton, 2020 NEA Jazz Master Bobby McFerrin at his 60th birthday celebration, and in a special in hour two of the show). Plus more from June featured artist Monty Alexander – this time from two out-of-print classics he recorded on the Concord label – and new music from Steve Davis, and Bill Frisell with Thomas Morgan.

Thursday, June 13

Night Train highlights jazz piano trios tonight – including those led by June featured artist Monty Alexander, Nat Cole, Laurence Hobgood, George Cables, Jessica Williams, Alan Broadbent, and Lisa Hilton. Plus new music from Charlie Apicella & Iron City, Mary Stallings and more – and tribute albums from Poncho Sanchez and Terence Blanchard (for Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo), Dick Conte (for Bill Evans), and Joe Magnarelli (for Tadd Dameron).

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
