Global Village marks the birthday of legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba. We also remember singer Dorothy Masuka, who passed away at the end of February. She began her career in South Africa and Miriam Makeba recorded several of her songs. We’ll hear those and some music from Masuka, new music from veteran South African singer Irene Mawela, and also tracks from E.T. Mensah and Osibisa to kick off the March Music of Ghana feature.
Tuesday, March 5
It’s carnival time in the Global Village! To celebrate Fat Tuesday, Global Village heads to some carnival hot spots: Brazil for some samba, Trinidad for calypso and steel drum music, and, of course, to the Crescent City for the Mardi Gras Indian group Wild Tchoupitoulas, and such New Orleans favorites as Professor Longhair, the Hawketts, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Wednesday, March 6
Throughout March Global Village features music of Ghana and in this special for Ghanaian Independence Day the entire show is devoted to Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat from such acclaimed artists as E.T. Mensah (“The King of Highlife”), Ebo Taylor, K. Frimpong, Pat Thomas and groundbreaking compilations like Afrobeat Airways and Ghana Special that introduced music of that country to a wider international audience.
Thursday, March 7
This time in the Global Village, it’s new EuroFolk. Among the highlights are Italian neo-folk accordionist Riccardo Tesi, the second album (and first to feature Sandy Denny) from the pioneering English Folk Rock band Fairport Convention, Finnish neo-folk and bagpipe band Pare, Scotland’s Breabach, and Griselda Sanderson, a Scottish artist who plays Norwegian hardanger fiddle and Swedish nyckelharpa.
Friday, March 8
It’s International Women’s Day and Global Village celebrates with women singers, songwriters and instrumentalists from around the globe. We’ll hear music from the African all-star lineup of Les Amazones d’Afrique, Mexican-American singer Lila Downs, ‘tropical pop’ star Hollie Cook, Syrian musician and composer Maya Youssef, Chinese pipa player Wu Man, Paraguayan classical guitarist Berta Rojas, Mongolian singer Urna, Finnish folk group Enkel, and more.
