Global Village marks birthdays of the Queen of Salsa Celia Cruz and one of the giants of jazz, Dizzy Gillespie, focusing on his pioneering Latin and World jazz work. We’ll also hear Angelique Kidjo’s recent tribute to Celia Cruz, along with new music from Guts, the Garifuna Collective, the Minyo Crusaders, and Lila Downs.

Global Village offers a birthday special with Canadian soprano saxophone and flute player, composer, Juno Award winner, and recipient of the Order of Canada, Jane Bunnett. In a series of groundbreaking recordings, Bunnett worked with some of the most dynamic musicians in Cuba and explored an often unknown variety of styles, from the folkloric to the contemporary, from across that country. We talk with Bunnett as she delves into the history of the music, the artists she found, and the distinctive and inventive music she created with them. The show also features a wide array of selections from her many Cuban projects.

Global Village travels the globe for a fascinating array of guitar artists and styles this time, including great Nigerian guitar bands led by Prince Nico and King Sunny Ade, Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya with a tribute to Hawaiian guitarist Tau Moe, flamenco guitarist Jose ‘El Piru’ with French cellist Matthieu Saglio, Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizo, and three great players collectively known as the Malagasy Guitar Masters.

Global Village highlights the roots reggae revival and some of the premier Jamaican artists who have shaped the roots renaissance in Jamaica. We’ll hear music from Protoje, Jah9, Chronixx, Raging Fyah, Kabaka Pyramid, and Jesse Royal. We’ll also hear music from U.K. reggae band, The Skints, along with music from the Bollywood Brass Band, Brian Marsella’s Imaginarium, and the Debo Band.
Friday, October 25
Global Village pays tribute to the late drummer Ginger Baker with music he did with Fela and some Nigerian inspired music from one of his later album. The show also marks the birthday of Brazilian bossa nova pioneer, guitarist, and songwriter Roberto Menescal, including music he did with contemporary bossa group Bossacucanova. Plus the latest from Santana, the Rough Guide to World Jazz, and Spain’s Alma Afrobeat Ensemble.
