Night Train begins a week-long tribute to trombonist Curtis Fuller, who passed away earlier in the month, this time with music he did as a leader and with Benny Golson. We also mark birthdays of guitarist and singer Taj Mahal, guitarist Nobuki Takamen, composer Eric Satie, and saxophonist Jackie McLean (also featured in a special in hour two with Tina Brooks). Throughout the month we are also featuring music of Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock, and we’ll hear them with Jack DeJohnette as part of the acclaimed Standards Trio.

Night Train joins in with Global Village to mark Haitian Flag and Universities Day with music from Haitian-American vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant and a Haitian jazz project from Jacques Schwarz-Bart. We continue our week-long tribute to Curtis Fuller with music he did with Yusef Lateef. Our Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature continues with music from Makoto Ozone. And there’s new music from saxophonists Idit Shner and Diego Rivera.
Wednesday, May 19
Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Sonny Fortune, and bassists Kyle Eastwood and Cecil McBee (including a special with Tulsa native McBee in hour two of the show). The May Asian American Pacific Islander Month feature continues with music from Yosuke Yamashita, and there’s more from the ‘Standard Trio’ as we mark May birthdays of Keith Jarrett and Gary Peacock. Throughout the week, Night Train is also paying tribute to trombonist Curtis Fuller and we’ll hear him on a classic album with Joe Henderson and from his debut release as a leader on the Blue Note label.

Night Train wraps up a week-long tribute to trombonist Curtis Fuller with music from later in his career; marks birthdays of drummer Victor Lewis and jazz bagpiper Rufus Harley; features new music from Out to Dinner, Lunar Octave, and Dr. Lonnie Smith; and in conjunction with the May Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month feature, there’s new music from composer and conductor Jihye Lee, and a special in hour two featuring pioneering Japanese pianist, composer, and band leader Toshiko Akiyoshi.
