Night Train marks the birthday of soul jazz saxophone legend Stanley Turrentine – and since we’re featuring siblings this month, we’ll focus on tracks Turrentine did with or were composed by his brother Tommy in hour one (with a Jazz Profiles special about Stanley in hour two of the show). We’ll also hear new music from guitarist Dave Stryker (who worked with Turrentine early in his career), pianist Emmet Cohen, and saxophonist Diego Rivera.
Tuesday, April 6
Night Train marks birthdays of pianists Randy Weston and Andre Previn, drummer Art Taylor, and baritone saxophonist and cool jazz pioneer Gerry Mulligan. It’s also the birthday of guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli and we’ll hear him with his brother Martin (for the Siblings Month feature) in hour one and in a special in hour two of the show. Also on tap – the Pat Metheny album that just went into the National Recording Registry, and new music from Charles Lloyd & the Marvels, and Raul Gutierrez & his Cuban Big Band with a tribute to “mambo king” Perez Prado.
Wednesday, April 7
Music tonight on the Night Train from Freddie Hubbard, Mongo Santamaria, Victor Feldman, Pete LaRoca, and Billie Holiday (including a special in hour two) – all born on this date, along with new releases from Latin jazz trombonist Noah Bless and saxophonist Idit Shner.
Thursday, April 8
Night Train continues the April Siblings feature with music from the DeFrancesco Brothers, along with famous jazz siblings Hank Jones and Nat Adderley. It’s also the birthday of legendary jazz vocalist Carmen McRae, here with albums she did in tribute to Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Thelonious Monk, and of Yip Harburg (of Wizard of Oz fame) with one of his classic songs done by Abbey Lincoln in hour one and a special about the famed lyricist in hour two of the show. We’ll also get to some new music from New Orleans High Society, 3 More Sounds, and Dr. Lonnie Smith (with Iggy Pop!).
