Night Train kicks off the week with some jazz guitarists – including Pat Martino (from one of his Blue Note releases and early work as part of the John Handy Quintet), Dave Stryker, Larry Coryell with John Scofield and Joe Beck, Charlie Apicella, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, and Barney Kessell. We’ll also sneak in a few pianists as well, including Chick Corea, Monty Alexander, Gene Harris, and Mike LeDonne.
Tuesday, April 20
Night Train highlights Israeli jazz expats in this edition of the show. We’ll hear music from bassist Avishai Cohen, whose birthday it is today, from his new album and with Chick Corea’s Origin lineup; guitarist Issi Rozen (also born on this date); the Cohen family (Anat, a different Avishai, and Yuval) for our April Siblings feature; and a special in hour two that highlights a number of Israeli musicians who have made New York home and become key players on the jazz scene there. Night Train remembers producer, writer, and DJ Bob Porter throughout this week – here with an album he produced for Lou Donaldson. Plus birthday salutes to Tito Puente and Lionel Hampton, and new music from the Echo Park Project.
Wednesday, April 21
Lots to cover tonight on the Night Train. We mark birthdays of trombonist Slide Hampton, guitarist Mundell Lowe (from dates he did with great jazz singers including Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae and Sarah Vaughan), Carline Ray (from the International Sweethearts of Rhythm), and even Iggy Pop (guesting on a new album from soul jazz organ great Dr. Lonnie Smith).
There is music from three jazz artists just named Guggenheim Fellows – Rez Abbasi, Helen Sung, and Elio Villafranca.
We’ll get to music and share information about the NEA Jazz Masters Tribute concert coming up tomorrow.
Night Train also continues its weeklong tribute to influential writer, DJ, and producer Bob Porter, with selections from albums he worked on by Herbie Mann, Charles Kynard, and Red Holloway.
And we’ll hear new music from the 14 Jazz Orchestra, saxophonist Diego Rivera, and guitarists Roni Ben-Hur, Lee Ritenour, and former Wichitan Greg Skaff.
Thursday, April 22
Night Train wraps up the week-long tribute to producer, writer, and DJ Bob Porter with selections from albums he produced for Hank Crawford & Jimmy McGriff, and Scott Hamilton. We’ll also mark birthdays of Tommy Turrentine (brother of saxophonist Stanley Turrentine), percussionist Candido, and bassists Paul Chambers (with Miles Davis) and Charles Mingus (including a Mingus Big Band concert special in hour two of the show).
