The final Monday of every month, it’s Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, a monthly concert series showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual event that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.
This time, in conjunction with the July Music of the Roma feature, it’s the popular Romanian Roma brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia. The band’s first major tour and debut album in the late ‘90s paved the way for Balkan brass bands on the international stage, and they remain among the most successful of the brass ensembles, topping the world music charts, touring internationally, and appearing in several films.

Global Village wraps up the July Roma music feature with a broad array of artists and styles of music from the original home of the Roma in northwestern India to Spain and beyond. We’ll hear popular brass bands Fanfare Ciocarlia and the Boban Markovic Orkestar, the Roma-inspired Istanbul Oriental Ensemble, Romanian village band Taraf de Haidouks, Russian Roma singer Lilya Erdenko, and contemporary and fusion sounds from the Gypsy Cuban Project, the Hungarian band Anselmo Crew, and Joe Zawinul.

Global Village celebrates “Uncommon Instruments Awareness Day” with music played on musical saw, zgamonium, bamboo ski poles, vegetables and more – along with the home made traditional instruments of Congolese favorites - Konono No. 1, electronics from Jon Hassell, and some instruments uncommon in (world) jazz – Rufus Harley on bagpipes, Howard Johnson’s modern approach to the tuba, and banjo and harmonica taking center stage for Bela Fleck & the Flecktones.
Thursday, August 1
Global Village marks the anniversary of the Concert for Bangladesh, which took place on August 1, 1971 in Madison Square Garden. The groundbreaking event was the first and a template for many benefit concerts that followed to aid a variety of humanitarian efforts. Global Village features music from the Concert, from the two key artists who helped put the event together - George Harrison and Ravi Shankar – and from other artists who performed there.

It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.
Among the highlights this time:
New oud sounds and styles from Tristan Driessens, Yinon Muallem and Taichmania
New African releases from Mali’s Samba Toure, Zimbabwean artist and Monoswezi member Hope Masike, Guinean star Natu Camara, and the Congolese group Kokoko
And sounds from and inspired by music of Spain from the Gaiza Project and the Berlin-based flamenco jazz group Rasgueo.
