The final Monday of every month, we present Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival, our award-winning monthly concert series (First Place in the 2020 Kansas Association of Broadcasters Annual Awards in the Special Program category) showcasing top world music artists and groups who have appeared at the prestigious annual festival that takes place each spring in Savannah, Georgia.
This time, in conjunction with the August Mandolin Month feature, the featured artist is Hamilton de Holanda. The critically acclaimed musician who plays his own distinctive model of 10-string Brazilian mandolin is known for his remarkable technical skill and an inventive style that is deeply rooted in great Brazilian traditions of choro and samba, but ranges well beyond them to incorporate jazz and other influences.
Tuesday, September 1
September is Global Music Month, as a number of world music festivals in the US and Canada team up to present a series of virtual world music performances in place of their normal events. This time in the Global Village we’ll run down events taking place in the coming week from festivals in New York, Toronto, Seattle and Chicago. We’ll continue to preview Global Music Month events throughout the month as well. September is also Piano Month and Global Village will be featuring pianists from around the globe throughout the month too, kicking things off this time with flamenco jazz pianist Chano Dominguez, and a project put together by Congolese keyboardist Ray Lema and German pianist Joachim Kuhn.
Wednesday, September 2
Global Village marks birthdays of two master musicians who combine traditional forms and jazz. We’ll hear pianist Pablo Ziegler, who worked with new-tango creator Astor Piazzolla and continues to expand the boundaries of contemporary tango music. It’s also the birthday of Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida and we’ll hear him doing some great Brazilian pieces along with guitarists Charlie Byrd and Carlos Barbosa-Lima. And we’ll hear some of the latest from Estonia (Tuulikki Bartosik), Finland (Maria Kalaniemi & Eero Grundstrom), and Mali (Habib Koite with special guest Toumani Diabate), and remember Angolan great Waldemar Bastos.
Thursday, September 3
Global Village marks the birthday of Dorothy Masuka, the Zimbabwean-born singer who launched her career in South Africa. We also stay in South Africa for the September Piano Month feature, with music from one of the pioneers of South African jazz and a 2019 NEA Jazz Master, Abdullah Ibrahim, along with music from Bheki Mseleku and Hotep Idris Galeta (with John Handy). Plus new Latin sounds from pianist Gonzalo Rubacaba with singer Aymee Nuviola, and from singer Miguel de Leon.
Friday, September 4
It’s New Month/New Music time in the Global Village. Each month, Global Village devotes an entire show to the best of recently released and forthcoming world music albums.
Among the highlights this time:
- Algerian rock from Sidi Bemol and Korean psychedelic folk rock from Coreyah,
- New Mongolian music from Khusugten,
- The latest from Afel Bocoum, Malian guitarist and former member of Ali Farke Toure’s band,
- And with Hispanic Heritage Month underway later in September, Global Village highlights new Latin jazz from Mongorama, the UK’s Charanga del Norte and the John Santos Sextet,
- And contemporary sounds from the multi-national Ladama lineup, the reunited Los Mocosos, and the first Spanish-language album from the Mavericks.
