Residents In USD 259 Can Vote In All School Board Races

Residents in the Wichita Public School District can vote next month for any candidate running for school board, no matter which board district they live in – which is causing confusion for many area voters.

See a map of BOE districts here.

Sedgwick County Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman says in primary elections, a voter would have to live in the district and vote for a candidate in that district.

"In the general election you’ve always been able to vote on all the offices within [USD] 259, but that is different than most other races," she says. "And so it is confusing to people when that comes up every few years."

Candidates running for the Wichita Board of Education are:

  • District 1: Betty Arnold (incumbent) and Ben Blankley
  • District 2: Julie Hedrick, Trish Hileman and Debra Washington
  • District 5: Peter V. Grant and Mike Rodee (incumbent)
  • District 6: Walt Chappell, Shirley A. Jefferson and Ron Rosales

None of the races had a primary election. The general election is Nov. 7.
