Harold and the Purple Crayon. While many are acquainted with the book by author/illustrator Crockett Johnson, few are aware of what went in to making it. Kansas State University Professor Philip Nel recently spoke with Beth Golay about his book, How to Draw the World, which takes a deep dive into the children's classic. We have part of their conversation.

Plus more on these stories:

  • The Kansas Department of Transportation will receive about $2.6 million dollars to update its crash data collection systems.
  • Many schools forbid tag or other rough play during recess because of safety concerns. Now some Wichita schools are trying a new approach.
  • A new study from Kansas State University finds re-introducing native bison to tallgrass prairie can increase biodiversity and drought resilience.
  • Several Midwest communities are working with an environmental group to stop the use of certain fertilizers and weed killers in public parks. It’s part of a national program and more cities could soon follow suit.
  • The Sheriff's Office Offender Registration Unit will relocate at the start of the new year.
  • An historic stone Joan of Arc statue in Wichita is coming out of storage.
