On Stage: Warm Weather

Now that May has arrived and we're reasonably sure that snow is not in the immediate weather forecast, it's time to get out in the fresh air and enjoy some outdoor entertainment. One option is an annual tradition for the city, the open-to-all Opera on the Lake, brought to you by the Wichita Grand Opera. Hosted by Bradley Fair, the evening is an open-air event; you can bring a blanket or a lawn chair for free, or you can purchase a reserved seat, or you can go the VIP route, which includes a three-course dinner and seating on the patio at Newport Grill.

This year, the theme is “POPera: Simply Irresistible,” and the program will reflect the theme by combining well-loved music from a variety of well-known operas with also well-loved and well-known pop songs. You can catch Opera on the Lake this year on May 31st, 7 pm.

But if you're not an outdoorsy person, don't fret—Music Theatre Wichita has a season planned that will keep you charmed and entertained while everyone remains cool and indoors. First up is the musical comedy Sister Act, based on the 1992 film of the same name. With original music by Oscar-and-Tony-award-winner Alan Menken, the show highlights the antics—and predicaments—of Deloris, a nightclub singer who finds herself hiding out in a convent, disguised as a nun, after witnessing a murder. It is to be expected that the new sister will shake things up. Sister Act is onstage at Century II, June 13th to the 17th.
