Dave Brubeck And Clark Terry Centennials, Roberta Gambarini And Nino Rota

Monday, November 30

Night Train wraps up the November Mose Allison feature with more music from him and with covers of his songs by Curtis Stigers and Swingadelic. There’s new music from Isaiah J. Thompson (a tribute to Buddy Montgomery), Wolff Clark Dorsey (a tribute to the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album), John Daversa’s comforting quarantine project, and Radam Schwartz with his Organ Big Band. And it’s the birthday of vocalist Roberta Gambarini and we’ll hear her with legendary pianist Hank Jones in hour one, and in a concert special with the Airmen of Note in hour two of the show.

Tuesday, December 1

Tonight on the Night Train, we kick off a new month’s feature marking centennial birthdays of two jazz greats, Dave Brubeck and Clark Terry. We’ll hear Terry tonight recorded live at the Wichita Jazz Festival, and Brubeck from his Red Hot and Cool album. Speaking of Red Hot, today is both World AIDS Day and Giving Tuesday and Night Train highlights some music from the Red Hot series that benefits AIDS prevention and education efforts around the world. (Global Village features a special devoted to the world music side of the Red Hot releases tonight.) There are also birthday salutes to bass icon Jaco Pastorius (with Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny and Weather Report) and saxophonist Carlos Garnett. New music tonight comes from Jason Marsalis, Mark Egan & Danny Gottlieb, Billy Childs, and Conrad Herwig.

Wednesday, December 2

Night Train marks a number of jazz birthdays (pianist Wynton Kelly with Miles Davis, composer and arranger Eddie Sauter with Stan Getz, lyricist Adolph Green performed by Blossom Dearie, saxophonist PJ Perry teamed up with Campbell Ryga, pianist Amina Figarova with her new electric band, and vocalist Fay Classen with the Millennium Jazz Orchestra in hour one and in a concert special in hour two of the show). Plus music from December featured artist Dave Brubeck, and new releases from Bobby Watson and the Royce Campbell/Chris Whiteman Project.

Thursday, December 3

It’s the birthday today of famed film composer Nino Rota and Night Train celebrates with jazz covers of his compositions from Bill Frisell, Enrico Rava, and Enrico Pieranunzi. There’s also new music from Eddie Henderson and Jerry Bergonzi, and selections from December featured artists Clark Terry and Dave Brubeck (including a Brubeck special in hour two of the show).
