Global Village highlights Latin Grammy nominees in advance of this Thursday’s Awards ceremony. We’ll focus on some of the less-publicized categories, including Latin jazz, traditional tropical, tango, instrumental, and more. Among the artists featured are pianist Chick Corea, singer-songwriter Alex Cuba, tango jazz master Emilio Solla, Brazilian guitarist Yamandu Costa, Cuba’s Orquesta Failda, and Colombian superstar Carlos Vives with special guest Ruben Blades

Tuesday, November 17

Global Village highlights the world music side of trombonist Roswell Rudd, bassist Ben Allison, and composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram, all born on this date. The November I Threes/Wailers feature continues with the I Threes as special guests on Gilberto Gil’s tribute to Bob Marley, and music from Marley with the Wailers and I Threes. Plus new music this time from Galician percussionist Xabier Diaz and Scotland’s Acid Croft specialists, Shooglenifty.

Wednesday, November 18

Global Village marks Moroccan Independence Day with a program devoted to music from that nation. We’ll hear some of the ‘70s artists who ushered in a new contemporary style of music; the meeting of the spiritual Gnawa and jazz in the music of Randy Weston and Don Cherry; eclectic master musicians like Hassan Erraji and Majid Bekkas, and more.

Thursday, November 19

Global Village marks Garifuna Settlement Day, a national holiday in Belize to celebrate the Garifuna people and culture. This indigenous American and African people have long been a threatened culture and musicians have been at the forefront of the effort to preserve and bring to wider attention its wealth and beauty. We’ll hear music from a groundbreaking international release, Paranda, along with key figures like Andy Palacio, Aurelio, the Garifuna Collective and the Garifuna Women’s Project.

Friday, November 20

Global Village marks the birthday of the late, great Crescent City legend Dr. John. We’ll hear music from a number of his albums, along with guest appearances with Olu Dara, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Donald Harrison, Angelique Kidjo, Taj Mahal, and Cyril Neville, and as part of the New Orleans Social Club project.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
