Birthdays Of March Artists Ornette Coleman And Bobby McFerrin Plus Bix Beiderbecke And Bill Anschell

Monday, March 9

Today is the birthday of one of Night Train’s featured artists for the month, Ornette Coleman, and we’ll hear music from his debut album, with Prime Time, and in a cover of one of his pieces from Bobby McFerrin (another March featured artist) with Chick Corea in hour one, and a special exploring early covers of Coleman compositions in hour two of the show. Plus music from Keely Smith (also born on this date), Tommy Flanagan and Ralph Towner (also featured this month), and the latest from the Diva Jazz Orchestra and Norway’s Helge Lien Trio.

Tuesday, March 10

March feature music continues tonight with Oregon (with Ralph Towner), Steve Khan (with an Ornette Coleman cover), and Tommy Flanagan (from his debut album as a leader). We’ll also mark birthdays of singer Carol Saboya and jazz cornet pioneer Bix Biederbecke (including a special in hour two featuring his music and a conversation with a Bix biographer), hear new music from vocalist Chanda Rule and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, and (for International Bagpipe Day!) a little music from jazz bagpiper Rufus Harley.

Wednesday, March 11

Night Train marks birthdays of singers Judy Niemack and also March featured artist Bobby McFerrin. We’ll hear music from one of some of McFerrin’s releases, work he did with Jon Hendricks and Yo-Yo Ma, and a special in hour two featuring a performance based on his massive Vocabularies project. We’ll also hear music from one of McFerrin’s influences, Keith Jarrett, from his famed Koln Concert recording.

Thursday, March 12

A special edition of Night Train as we pay tribute to one of the giants of jazz piano, McCoy Tyner, who passed away last week at the age of 81. We’ll hear him as part of the legendary John Coltrane Quartet, as a leader, as a guest with Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson, and in hour two of the show, in a special interview and concert performance.
