GroundUp Fest, Cuban Double Bill, Caribbean Sounds, Peter Gabriel And Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 10

Global Village heads back to Miami Beach for another program in our on-going festival series featuring concert performances from the innovative and eclectic GroundUp Music Festival. This time it’s a Cuban double bill featuring acclaimed guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa from the Buena Vista Social Club and Cuarteto Patria with special guest the legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa, and one of the rising stars of the Cuban jazz scene, pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa.

Tuesday, February 11

In conjunction with the February Carnival feature, Global Village visits some of the islands of the Caribbean whose music is not as well-known as that of, say, Jamaica or Cuba. We’ll hear artists from Dominica, St. Vincent, Curacao, the Bahamas, Montserrat, St. Croix, the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, and more. Among the artists featured are Exuma, Blinky & the Roadmasters, Stanley & the Ten Sleepless Knights, Arrow, and even a Caribbean flavored number from Anderson, Buford, Wakeman & Howe.

Wednesday, February 12

Global Village continues the February Carnival feature with a trip to Haiti, where carnival is also celebrated with great fanfare and music. We’ll hear music from the legendary compas group Tabou Combo,  roots music group Chouk Bwa Libete, one of the giants of Haitian music, Nemours Jean-Baptiste, the Creole Choir of Cuba, a vocal group made up of Cubans of Haitian descent, and more.

Thursday, February 13

Global Village celebrates the birthday of Peter Gabriel with his own world-influenced recordings, guest appearances with world music artists (including Angelique Kidjo, Afro Celt Sound System, and Youssou N’Dour), and music from  artists on RealWorld Records, the world music label he founded, including  Jam Nation, the Imagined Village and Papa Wemba.

Friday, February 14

It’s hearts and flowers in the Global Village, as the show celebrates Valentine’s Day with love songs from around the world from the likes of Richard Thompson, Bob Marley, Bebel Gilberto and Malo. It’s also the birthday of Michael Doucet of Beausoleil, so we’ll hear some romantic songs from the famed Cajun player as well.
