Global Village celebrates the birthday of legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen in a program devoted to his music – from the early highlife band, Koola Lobitos, and the original Afrobeat ensembles of Fela, to solo albums and guest appearances from throughout his career – including music from the documentary, Finding Fela, and a collaboration with one of the rising stars of contemporary African music, Sia Tolno.

Tuesday, August 13

Global Village switches from English folk to New Euro Folk this time with music from Portugal from fado singer Mariza, Portuguese Guitar player Custodio Castelo, singer-songwriter Lula Pena, concertina quartet Danças Ocultas, and Portuguese klezmer group Melech Mechaya. We’ll also hear music from Italian band Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Albanian cellist Redi Hasa with Italian singer Maria Mazzotta, Spanish guitarist Pipo Romero, and Breton group ‘Ndiaz.

Wednesday, August 14

Global Village celebrates the birthday of English folk singer Maddy Prior with music she did with Steeleye Span, with the Carnival Band, as a solo artist, as a guest with Richard & Linda Thompson, and as part of the Silly Sisters with June Tabor.

Thursday, August 15

Fifty years ago on this date at around 5 in the afternoon Richie Havens took to the stage to kick off the Woodstock Festival. Global Village marks the occasion with some different music from Woodstock artists, songs performed at Woodstock done by other artists, and more. We’ll hear Richie Havens, the Incredible String Band, Ravi Shankar, Santana, and Joe Cocker – all of whom performed at Woodstock – along with a new album from Erik Applegate featuring  songs from and inspired by the festival, and a tribute to Jimi Hendrix from Indian electric guitar master Prasanna.

Friday, August 16

Global Village celebrates Statehood Day, an annual holiday in Hawaii to mark its admission as a state in 1959. We’ll hear early Hawaiian guitar master Sol Ho?opi?i, the legendary Gabby Pahinui with Ry Cooder, contemporary Slack Key guitar players Ledward Kaapana and Leonard Kwan, and some interesting fusions of Hawaiian music with Indian, classical, flamenco and Taiwanese music from Debashish Bhattacharya, Daniel Ho, and Keola Beamer.
