Music From Finland, Tunisian Republic Day, Yomo Toro & Accordions

Monday, July 23

Global Village highlights some fantastic fiddles, including Indian violinist L. Subramaniam and roots music fiddler Alison Kraus, both born on this date; and we’ll also hear classical and Nordic folk ensemble, the Danish String Quartet, and the Swedish trad trio, Vasen (featuring the nyckleharpa or keyed fiddle in their instrumental lineup) – both featured in concert next week in the next edition of Global Village at the Savannah Music Festival. Plus some music from South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, who was just named a 2019 NEA Jazz Master, the first African-born artist so honored.

Tuesday, July 24

Global Village has another bout of Accordion Mania with a wide array of releases featuring the instrument. Among the highlights – albums from two impressive Finnish accordionists, Teija Niku and Maria Kalaniemi, as we continue the Hot July/Cool Nordic Sounds feature; also French neo-folk trio of Maes, Martin & Gruel,  I.K. Dairo ( who introduced the accordion into Nigerian Ashiko music), zydeco star C.J. Chenier, Poland’s Motion Trio, and Russian émigré group Ersatz Musika.

Wednesday, July 25

Global Village marks Tunisian Republic Day, a national holiday in Tunisia, with a wide array of artists and styles of music from that country, from Louisa the Tunisian, a popular artist during and after World War II across North Africa and in France, through cross-cultural and contemporary artists such as oud player Anouar Brahem, Amine & Hamza, Bargou 08, DuOud and Eurovision Song Contest Winner Amina.

Thursday, July 26

Today marks the birthday of cuatro player and salsa great Yomo Toro. Global Village pays tribute to him in a special edition of the show that features music spanning his seven decade long career - including both albums under his own name along with recordings he did with the Fania All Stars, Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Roswell Rudd, Daniel Ponce, David Byrne and Ned Sublette.

Friday, July 27

Global Village continues the Hot July/Cool Nordic Sounds feature with a visit to Finland. We’ll hear traditional and contemporary folk, jazz and rock influenced music, Finnish Tango and more from such influential groups and artists as the hit group Varttina, kantele master and key figure in the Finnish folk revival Martti Pokela, accordion master Kimmo Pohjonen with Kronos Quartet, electro-bagpipe group Pare, the all-harmonica lineup of Svang (from their new Tango album), and more.
