Music Of Portugal And Panama, Latin Soul, Ska, Roots Reggae & New Month/New Music

Monday, November 27

Global Village highlights some Latin soul, funk, and boogaloo sounds this time – including the Joe Cuba boogaloo hit, “Bang Bang,” Brazilian soul pioneer Tim Maia, and contemporary Latin soul bands Buyepongo, Palo!, and Money Chicha.

Tuesday, November 28

Global Village marks Panama’s Independence or National Day (marking the country’s independence from Spain in 1821) with traditional, soul, cumbia, and jazz-inspired music from Panamanian artists – including Danilo Perez, Papi Brandao, the Exciters, the Silvertones, Los Caballeros de Colon and more.

Wednesday, November 29

Global Village highlights vintage and contemporary ska and roots reggae – including music from the legendary ska band, the Skatalites, and also from Skatalites band members Jackie Mittoo and Rico Rodriguez (as part of Jazz Jamaica). And there’s roots reggae revivalists Ziggy Marley (with brother Stephen Marley), Jamaica’s Raging Fyah (with Jesse Royal), and Baltimore’s Jah Works.

Thursday, November 30

Global Village wraps up the November New Euro Folk feature with music from Portugal, including famed fado singer Mariza, award winning Portuguese Guitar player Custodio Castelo, singer-songwriter Lula Pena, concertina quartet Danças Ocultas, and Portuguese klezmer group Melech Mechaya. Plus new music from other European folk inspired artists – Italian band Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Albanian cellist Redi Hasa with Italian singer Maria Mazzotta, Spanish guitarist Pipo Romero and the Breton group ‘Ndiaz.
