Global Village marks the birthday of Adolphe Sax, the man who invented the saxophone, with a program devoted to saxophone music and musicians from around the world – including Africa’s Manu Dibango and Seun Kuti, the Skatalites and Dean Fraser from Jamaica, Balkan artists Fanfare Ciocarlia and Boris Kovac and a bossa nova classic from jazz saxophonist Stan Getz.
(Strange Currency and Night Train also celebrate Sax’s birthday tonight.)
Tuesday, November 7
As part of the November Euro New Folk feature, Global Village heads to Scotland for music from a wide range of artists, both traditional and those who add contemporary and other stylistic influences. Among the artists featured are John Martyn, Shooglenifty, Old Blind Dogs, Karine Polwart, Big Country, Julie Fowlis, and (Glasgow-born) Mark Knopfler.
Wednesday, November 8
As part of the November New Euro Folk feature, Global Village heads to Spain for a wide array of traditional and new folk sounds from many different regions of the country. We’ll hear the classic new flamenco of Paco de Lucia and variations on it from Vicente Amigo, Pepe Habichuela (with legendary jazz bassist Dave Holland), and Jose El Piru (with French cellist Matthieu Saglio); the contemporary Catalan cobla of the Biflats; master Basque accordionist Kepa Junkera; Galician folk and early music ensemble Doa; and even some vintage ‘60s Spanish garage band music.
Thursday, November 9
Global Village celebrates Cambodian Independence Day with music from the Golden Age of Cambodian Rock and some contemporary groups and artists creating their own distinctive contemporary Cambodian music. Among the artists featured Cambodian stars Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Seresyothea, contemporary bands Dengue Fever and Cambodian Space Project, and Cambodian-American artists Kmang Kmang and Bochan.
Friday, November 10
Grab the popcorn for a cinematic show this time in the Global Village for the birthdays of Italian film composer Ennio Morricone and the mastermind of Warner Bros. cartoon music, Carl Stalling. Plus more music for the November New Euro Folk feature – this time including the latest from Slovakia’s Balkansambel, Croatia’s Kries, and Portugual’s Coimbra Fado.
