International Jazz Day Artists & Ella’s Centennial

Monday 4.24.17

Night Train celebrates birthdays of two great tenor players – Joe Henderson and Johnny Griffin – and percussionist and founding member of the group Oregon, Collin Walcott. Throughout the week, Night Train will also be featuring artists appearing at the big International Jazz Day Concert that will be webcast Sunday from Havana – with music tonight from Herbie Hancock, Christian Sands, and Till Bronner. Plus more music for the April Women in Jazz feature from baritone saxophonist Claire Daly and singer Nancy King, and new music from saxophonist Bobby Watson, and guitarist John Moulder.

Tuesday 4.25.17

It is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ella Fitzgerald and Night Train marks the centennial birthday of one of the most beloved singers in American popular music with a special program featuring music from across her career, in special partnerships, from the classic Songbook recordings, in tribute to her, and in hour two of the show, with a Jazz Profiles special chronicling her life and career.

Wednesday 4.26.17

Night Train marks the birthday of tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards with music he did as a leader and with bassist Leroy Vinnegar – and in hour two of the show a special about the Central Avenue jazz scene that Teddy Edwards was part of and its importance to West Coast jazz and the African-American community of Los Angeles. Also more music from artists appearing at the International Jazz Day Global Concert on April 30th – including Herbie Hancock and Kurt Elling – and new music from singer Virginia Schenck, pianist and singer Eliane Elias, and newly named Guggenheim fellow Jeff “Tain” Watts.

Thursday 4.27.17

Night Train marks the birthday of drummer Connie Kay with music he did with Paul Desmond, John Coltrane and Modern Jazz Quartet bandmate Milt Jackson. It’s also the birthday of guitarist Lionel Loueke and Night Train features music he did with Jack DeJohnette in hour one, and a special performance from the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show. And Night Train wraps up a week-long look at the artists appearing at this year’s International Jazz Day Concert Sunday, and offers some final selections for the April Ella Fitzgerald Centennial feature.
