Night Train marks birthdays of guitar great Grant Green and pianist Monty Alexander (also featured tonight on Global Village, where the Jamaican and Caribbean side of his work is explored). And there’s music from June featured artist Chick Corea (with Bela Fleck, his Akoustic Band and his New Trio) – and new music from tenor sax master George Coleman, singer Nicholas Bearde, harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens, and trumpeter Jim Rotondi.

Tuesday 6.7.16

Night Train highlights a number of tribute albums tonight – including salutes to Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chet Baker, and Sarah Vaughan. Plus two of the rising stars on today’s jazz vocal scene – Cecile McLorin Salvant and Gregory Porter; vibes players Stefon Harris and Gary Burton; and classics from Keith Jarrett’s ‘Standards Trio,’ Cannonball Adderley, and Leon Thomas.

Night Train celebrates birthdays of violinist Jenny Scheinman (with Allison Miller and Bill Frisell), pianist Uri Caine, and drummer Willie Jones III (on a new album of his own, and new sets from Russell Malone and Adrienne Fenemor). Plus new releases from singers Rene Marie, Rebecca Kilgore, Sarah Vaughan (the debut release of a live performance from 1978) and Rene Marie (her first set of all original material) – and more from June featured artist Chick Corea (from his album, The Vigil, and with his Elektric Band II and the early Return to Forever lineup).

Tonight on the Night Train, birthday salutes to drummer Karl Latham (from his new album of ‘new standards’ called Living Standards); legendary songwriter Cole Porter (including compositions from him performed by the Brad Mehldau Trio on the new Blues and Ballads album and  by June featured artist Chick Corea); and pianist Kenny Barron (with music from his new album, Book of Intuition, and a special performance from the Savannah Music Festival in hour two of the show).
