Celebrating Presidents’ Day And Gambian Independence Day & More Marley/Roots Revival

Monday, February 15

Global Village celebrates Presidents’ Day with music from artists who ran for or won the office of president – including Dizzy Gillespie, Fela, Ruben Blades, and Michel Martelly – plus Les Ambassadeurs (because every president needs some) and Brenda Fassie’s tribute to South African President, Nelson Mandela.

Tuesday, February 16

Global Village marks the birthday of one of the giants of the Portuguese guitar, Carlos Paredes, with music he did with Charlie Haden and a tribute to him from contemporary Portuguese guitar star Custudio Castelo – along with the latest from acclaimed contemporary fado singer Mariza and one of the legends of Lisbon fado, Portuguese guitar legend Armandinho. Plus more music for the February Bob Marley/Roots Reggae Revival feature – including music from Charlie Hunter’s remake of Marley’s classic Natty Dread album, and a new release from Taj Weekes & Adowa.

Wednesday, February 17

Global Village highlights some contemporary sounds and recent releases from Indian musicians or inspired by Indian music. We begin (as all endeavors should) with a celebration of Ganesh from the latest TriBeCaStan album, and continue with the new Indian-inflected Subcontinental Drift album from Canada’s Sultans of String, acclaimed sarod player and composer Amjad Ali Khan, contemporary singer Manek-E (from the Rough Guide to Bhangra Dance) and a lovely collaboration between sitarist Shujaat Husain Khan and Iranian singer Katayoun Goudarzi.

Thursday, February 18

Global Village celebrates Gambian Independence Day with rarely heard music and musicians from that small West African country. Highlights include popular early post-Independence bands like the Super Eagles, the acclaimed pioneer ‘roots’ band Ifang Bondi, U.S. based Gambian kora player Foday Musa Suso (with the groundbreaking Mandingo Griot Society band) and Juldah Camara with Justin Adams, Fofoulah, and Italian minimalist Ludovico Einaudi’s Taranta Project.

Friday, February 19

Global Village marks the birthday of Dave Wakeling with music he did with both English Beat and General Public. Plus music from Bob Marley & the Wailers and roots revivalists Raging Fyah for the February feature, and one of this year’s Juno Award nominees in the Best World Music Album category – Alex Cuba.
