Night Train highlights a number of tribute albums tonight – including salutes to Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chet Baker, and Sarah Vaughan. Plus two of the rising stars on today’s jazz vocal scene – Cecile McLorin Salvant and Gregory Porter; vibes players Stefon Harris and Gary Burton; and classics from Keith Jarrett’s ‘Standards Trio,’ Cannonball Adderley and Leon Thomas.

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Gene Ammons, guitarist Nick Moran, and trombonist Steve Davis, continues the April Billie Holiday Centennial Birthday feature, and highlights music from several artists with upcoming local and regional concerts.

Wednesday, April 15

Night Train highlights music from vocalists Shirley Horn, Joe Williams, Jeff Baker and April featured artist Billie Holiday; classics from Cannonball Adderley, Art Tatum and Freddie Hubbard; and new music from the Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quartet, Jacky Terrasson, Anat Cohen and Justin Kauflin.
 

Thursday, April 16

Night Train celebrates birthdays of guitarist Ulf Wakenius, flutist Herbie Mann, and pianists Esbjorn Svensson and Junko Onishi – continues with the centennial birthday feature for Billie Holiday –highlights music from artists with regional concerts this weekend – and showcases the latest releases from pianists Eliane Elias (marking her first recording in Brazil since 1981) and Champian Fulton, the Keep On Keepin’ On (Clark Terry documentary) soundtrack, and the Brad Goode Quartet.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
