Monday March 9

Night Train marks birthdays of NEA Heritage Fellow and tabla master Zakir Hussain (performing with March featured artist Charles Lloyd), and singers Laurie Antonioli and Keely Smith. It’s also the birthday of Ornette Coleman, and along with music from both ends of his career, the second hour of the show features a special salute to the avant-garde pioneer  from Dewey Redman and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

Tuesday March 10

Night Train marks birthdays of jump blues guitarist Ronnie Earl, singer Carol Saboya, percussionist Mino Cinelu, and pianist Justin Kauflin, who just released a new album and was featured in the documentary, Keep On Keepin’ On, with Clark Terry – one of the Night Train featured artists for March. Plus music from the other March featured artist, 2015 NEA Jazz Master Charles Lloyd, and new music from the Dana Landry Trio, Candido, and Champian Fulton.

Wednesday March 11

Night Train marks birthdays of vocalists Judy Niemack and Bobby McFerrin (including a special performance of his Vocabularies project in hour two of the show). Plus more from March featured artists Clark Terry (with bassist Ray Brown) and Charles Lloyd (from his early ‘70s Waves album), and new music from the Rez Abbasi Acoustic Quartet, and guitarist Hank Marvin.

Thursday March 12

Night Train celebrates the birthday of beat icon Jack Kerouac with recordings from him, along with hipster tracks from Tom Waits, Anita O’Day, Lord Buckley, Bob Dorough with Dave Frishberg, Mark Murphy with Sheila Jordan, Bobby Troup, Chet Baker and more.  Plus a special in hour two that explores the connections between jazz and Jack Kerouac.
