Singer-songwriter James McMurtry is the son of American novelist Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove) and although he has inherited many of his father’s sensibilities for storytelling he remains—more than 25 years into his recording career—very much his own man. Released in late 1995 Washing Machine remains something of a curiosity in the Sonic Youth discography—filled with some of the longest songs in the band’s recorded output, it was also hailed as one of the most “open” of the band’s recordings, finding the group sounding looser and more relaxed than on previous albums. We’ll hear selections from Washing Machine on this episode of the show as well as music from Thurston Moore’s album from the same year, Psychic Hearts.
