Remembering Buddy DeFranco & Horace Silver Plus More Best Of 2014

Night Train celebrates the birthdays of pianist and composer Lisa Hilton, and drummer Paul Wertico – best known for his work with Pat Metheny. Plus more of the best of 2014 – including the Helge Lien Trio, Gerry Gibbs Thrasher Dream Trio, Kenny Barron & Dave Holland, Steve Khan,  Latin Grammy winner Paquito D’Rivera, and the start of a week-long salute to bop clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, who passed away at the end of last year.

Highlights on tonight’s Night Train include singers Carol Seboya, Mary Stallings and Amy Cervini; guitarists Jim Hall and Steve Khan; the Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd classic, Jazz Samba,  that introduced bossa nova to American audiences; Wrecking Crew saxophonist Plas Johnson; and music from The Latin Side of Herbie Hancock.

Wednesday 1.7.15

Night Train highlights more of the best of 2014 including four-time Grammy nominee Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, and show favorites Eric Alexander, Great Voices of Harlem, and Craig Handy & 2nd Line Smith. Plus the week-long tribute to clarinetist Buddy DeFranco continues with music he did with the John Pizzarelli Trio, and in hour two of the show, it’s a salute to Horace Silver, who passed away in 2014, with a special tribute concert featuring Christian McBride, Cedar Walton, Andy Bey, Randy Brecker, Dee Dee Bridgewater, George Coleman, Tom Harrell, Joe Lovano, Bernie Maupin and Charles Tolliver.

Thursday 1.8.15

Lots of clarinets tonight on the Night Train, as the show wraps up a week long tribute to Buddy DeFranco and highlights music from other clarinetists, including Anat Cohn, Ken Peplowski, David Murray, and Paquito D’Rivera. Plus more of the best of 2014 including the Ted Rosenthal Trio’s remarkable reinvention of “Rhapsody in Blue,” and Jane Ira Bloom’s surprising ballad project, Sixteen Sunsets.
