Bastille Day, Charlie Haden Tribute, Prestige 65th & Jazz Birthdays On The Night Train

SPECIAL: Night Train teams up with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Bastille Day, the French National Holiday, with music from a wide range of French jazz artists, along with music inspired by and recorded in France.

Among the artists featured – gypsy jazz guitarist DjangoReinhardt; his Hot Club of France partner, acclaimed violinist StephaneGrappelli;  Django-insprired music from BireliLagrene, Pearl Django and grandson DavidReinhardt; third stream pioneer Jacques Loussier; acclaimed accordionist Richard Galliano; jazz fusion artists Jean-Luc Ponty and Erik Truffaz; new albums from Christian Jacob and Didier & Francis Lockwood;  and tribute albums from Jacky Terrasson, Shirley Horn and Dee Dee Bridgewater.                                                                               

Tuesday 7.15.14

Night Train highlights contemporary singers and classic pianists tonight – including vocalists Shawnn Monteiro, Sara Gazarek, Halie Loren and Nancy Reed; and on the 88s – Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Ahmad Jamal and Billy Taylor.

Wednesday 7.16.14

Night Train marks birthdays of Brazilian guitartist Bola Sete, West Coast Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader, and tenor saxophonist Anton Schwartz. Plus newly named NEA Jazz Master Charles Lloyd, the late great Horace Silver, more music from Prestige Records for the July feature – this time from Charles Earland  and Tadd Dameron with John Coltrane - and new music from the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Bobby Sanabria, Jessica Williams and Kavita Shah.

SPECIAL: Night Train remembers great jazz bassist Charlie Haden, who passed away last week, in a special tribute show. The program will highlight music from throughout his career- from his days as the two-year old yodeling Cowboy Charlie with his family band, to his groundbreaking work with Ornette Coleman, his own groups – including Quartet West and the Liberation Music Orchestra - and collaborations with some of the greats of 20th century jazz, including Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Art Pepper, Hank Jones, Chet Baker, Abbey Lincoln and Michael Brecker.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
