Night Trains New Month Feature Marks The 50th Anniversary Of The Arrival Of The Beatles In America

Night Train kicks off a new month’s feature marking the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Beatles in America with great jazz covers of Beatles’ songs. Plus birthday celebrations tonight for saxophonist John Handy, tuba master Bob Stewart, and pianist, composer and Hot Five member Lil Harden Armstrong – and music from Grammy nominee Wayne Wallace, and Jazz Vocal Album Grammy winner, Gregory Porter.

This time on the Night Train it’s classics from Ella Fitzgerald, Cannonball Adderley with Bill Evans, the Miles Davis Quintet and McCoy Tyner – plus soul jazz organ master, Dr. Lonnie Smith, acclaimed vocalist Cassandra Wilson, and renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.

Night Train marks the birthday of jazz pianist Bill Mays with a variety of projects under his own name and from a large catalog of session work he did – including with bassist Martin Wind, and singers Mark Murphy and Trudy Desmond. Plus more for the February Beatlejazz feature – this time with music from Brian Melvoin and David Kikoski’s “Beatlejazz” project, pianists Florian Hoefner, Larry Goldings and Brad Mehldau, and Soulive’s Rubber Soulive album. Plus Randy Brecker’s A Night in Calisia, which took home the Grammy this year for Best Large Ensemble album, and the latest from Roswell Rudd, Kenny Burrell, and teenage organ phenom, Kevin Coelho.

Jazz guitar is the focus tonight on the Night Train with music from Jimmy Ponder, Jim Hall with Pat Metheny, the latest from Romero Lubambo, Bob Devos, the John Abercrombie Quartet, and Peter Bernstein - and in conjunction with our February Beatle jazz feature – covers of Beatles songs from Leni Stern and Grant Green.
