Kansas Lawmakers May Revisit Swatting-Related Law

Kansas House Rep. Gail Finney says she expects the state Legislature will beef up a law related to swatting after a recent incident in Wichita that left one man dead.

In 2013 Finney, a Wichita Democrat, introduced a false alarm bill related to swatting, where someone calls law enforcement with a false emergency in an attempt to draw multiple police officers to a certain address.

"This incident that happened wasn’t even part of the vision when I introduced that bill," Finney says. "I just thought that it was terrible that people would use public resources for fake calls."

Finney says she expects new legislation will be introduced at the Statehouse to add stricter penalties to the current law.

“It's not significant enough to take care of a case like this, so we need to go back and work on it and strengthen it,” she says.
