The Down Syndrome Society of Wichita serves more than 300 families in the Wichita area. The group's annual Buddy Walk takes place this weekend.
The Buddy Walk promotes the acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Executive Director Natalie Rolfe says their mission is to help people better understand the genetic disorder. They also provide support and resources to families, especially to new parents.
"When you have a new baby, that’s an experience within itself," Rolfe says. "But to find out you have a new baby with Down syndrome is a different experience. We provide support. We connect our families one to the other so they can make sure that they have that support as that child develops and grows."
The Down Syndrome Society has recently expanded its outreach efforts with more programs and activities. The Buddy Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 11:00 a.m. at Wichita State University.
