The Kansas Leadership Center (KLC), a Wichita-based nonprofit, is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and four chambers of commerce across Kansas to host a first-of-its-kind statewide civics competition on May 9 at KLC in downtown Wichita.
The Kansas State Finals of the National Civics Bee will feature middle school student finalists from four local competitions hosted by participating chambers in Hutchinson, Overland Park, Pittsburg and Wichita. Students will share their ideas for improving their communities and show their enthusiasm for civics. Family, friends and spectators will not get off the hook, as the audience will play along and test their civic knowledge too! The winner will receive a cash prize and represent Kansas in the national championship in Washington, D.C. on November 12, 2024.
The Kansas State Finals on May 9 will include a half day of special programming sponsored by Fidelity Bank that explores “Our Place in Democracy.” There will be a poetry reading from Huascar Medina, Kansas Poet Laureate emeritus and Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow, as well as a keynote from David Adkins, former Kansas legislator and current executive director and CEO of the Council of State Governments, and staff members Chris Green and Maren Berblinger facilitate group conversation on the part we all play in shaping the civic health of our communities. In addition, community-based organizations will also be in attendance sharing ways to get involved in the neighborhood, community and civic life.

ignitor 2.0 is for innovators and entrepreneurs who have completed ignitor 1.0 or have clearly defined how their idea solution solves a particular problem and are committed to mapping and digging into the steps towards launching their startup.

In ignitor 1.0 you will learn the key concepts and start-up language, how to talk about your idea, what to expect going through the process, how to listen to feedback to improve your idea, and why you need a prototype of your idea.
ignitor 1.0 is for innovators and aspiring entrepreneurs wanting to get started moving their idea forward by learning the start-up process and improving their idea.

We are a group of individuals practicing cultivation of the mind. All ages and people are welcome. Each week we have a thirty minute guided meditation followed by discussion. Our topics include meditation practice and living a life of compassion and contemplation. You do not need to have any experience to join and you will be welcomed by a very loving group of individuals. This is not a religious gathering. This course will explore the science behind weather systems by teaching the observational skills needed to make a forecast without using instruments or computer models. This presentation will delve into the impact of photography on the civil rights movement in the aftermath of the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education, tracing the evolution of how Black individuals and communities have been portrayed from historical beginnings to the era of Brown v. Board and up to the present day. The Big Idea is a series presented by Humanities Kansas. This program is a live stream of the event in Topeka.
Celebrate Asian creatives in our community during this program presented in partnership with Wichita Asian Association. The program will begin with a tai chi performance with Michael Xie, followed by a panel discussion with local creatives moderated by Sonalli Kurlekar, President of the Wichita Asian Association. Panelists include cellist Kylie Brown, dance artist Mina Estrada, and film producer Lela Meadow-Conner.

Watermark Books & Café will host local Kansas children's author Katie Gilstrap. Katie Gilstrap is the author of Spacemanatee! She will be at Watermark to discuss her follow-up book Penny Lu Porcupine which is a story about a cautious porcupine that summons the courage to stand up to threats both real and imagined, reassuring readers that they, too, can face their fears. Katie will be here to do a Storytime and a book signing after. We hope to see you there!
