Gwen Raverat: Magnum Opus Wood Engravings, 1909–1928
Head across the pond and join print dealer Tom Edwards for a discussion of Gwen Raverat, an English printmaker active in early 20th-century Great Britain. One of the great talents associated with the revival of wood engraving, Raverat led a remarkable life. The granddaughter of naturalist Charles Darwin and daughter of astronomer Sir George Darwin, Raverat moved among elite intellectual and artistic circles. The more than 150 engravings Raverat made between 1909 and 1928 stand as one of the great print productions of its time—the magnum opus of a fascinating woman living in a fascinating moment. Tom Edwards is an expert in 19th and 20th century British art. He is Managing Director of Abbott and Holder, a London art gallery and dealership founded in 1936. Edwards studied art history at the Courtauld Institute before joining Abbott and Holder in 2001. He became a director in 2012 and sole owner in 2021.
