Kenny Burrell, Remembering Bobby Hutcherson, Third Stream Jazz, And Birthday Celebrations

Monday 8.22.16

Night Train begins a week long tribute to Bobby Hutcherson, one of the legends of jazz vibes, who passed away last week. Tonight it’s one of his classic compositions, “Little B’s Poem,” music from his groundbreaking early work on Blue Note and later work on the Landmark label, and appearances with Ray Barretto, McCoy Tyner, and the Timeless All-Stars. Plus more music from August featured artist Kenny Burrel, and in celebration of Debussy’s birthday – jazz versions of some of his most famous compositions and other works that bring together jazz and classical influences.

Tuesday 8.23.16

Night Train highlights more music from vibes legend Bobby Hutcherson, who passed away last week at the age of 75, this time with music he did as a leader, with McCoy Tyner and Lee Morgan, and from his last Blue Note album with Joey DeFrancesco and David Sanborn. Plus more from August featured artist Kenny Burrell, new music from Joe Lovano and Steve Turre, and birthday salutes to pianist Brad Mehldau, KC saxophonist Bobby Watson, and Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal.

Throughout this week, Night Train has been featuring music from one of the great of jazz vibes, Bobby Hutcherson, who passed away last week. Tonight a special edition of the show devoted to his music, from one of his earliest appearances on record to one of his best later recordings, guest appearances with Dexter Gordon, Grant Green, and Abbey Lincoln, and a rarely heard Jazz Profiles specials about his life and music in hour two of the show.

Thursday 8.25.16

Night Train marks the birthday of Leonard Bernstein with jazz covers of his songs from Bill Charlap, Dave Liebman with Gil Goldstein, and Richie Cole. There’s also music for the birthdays of legendary saxophonist Wayne Shorter (including a special in hour two featuring music he did with hard bop master Lee Morgan), guitarist Pat Martino, bassist Charles Fambrough, vibes player Mike Freeman, and trombonist Micheal Dease – and more music from August featured artist Kenny Burrell, playing with both Paul Chambers and Grover Washington, Jr.
