Jazz Organ, Jazz Birthdays & A Musical Thanksgiving Feast

Monday 11.19.18

Night Train celebrates birthdays of pianist Kenny Werner (with music from his new solo piano album), alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, and trombonist and bandleader Tommy Dorsey (including a special in hour two featuring him and brother Jimmy). Plus new music from the Verve Jazz Ensemble and Jorge Nila, and more music for the November jazz organ feature.

Tuesday 11.20.18

Night Train marks birthdays of saxophonist Don Braden, cool jazz singer June Christy, and pianist Geoffrey Keezer; highlights new releases from Chip White, Aaron Goldberg (on a release that marks the return of drummer Leon Parker) and the Ted Nash Quinter (featuring drummer and WSU alum Matt Wilson); and, in conjunction with the November jazz organ trio, presents a Jazz Profiles special in hour two about the legendary soul jazz organist, Jimmy Smith.

Wednesday 11.21.18

Night Train marks birthdays of Crescent City great Dr. John and tenor sax legend Coleman Hawkins (including a special about him in hour two of the show); and highlights new music from organist Pat Bianchi (as part of the November jazz organ feature), French horn player Ken Wiley, and guitarists Lindsey Blair (with a tribute to Wes Montgomery) and John Scofield.

Thursday 11.22.18

Night Train joins in with Global Village and Strange Currency to celebrate Thanksgiving with a menu packed with musical goodies all about food – from the turkey and sweet potatoes to a host of holiday desserts – from such tasty players as Bob Dorough, Jaco Pastorius, Gene Ammons, Cyrus Chestnut, Matt Wilson, and (helping us along with the November Jazz Organ Feature) Organissimo and Kevin Coelho.

Chris Heim produces and hosts Global Village, a nationally and internationally distributed world music show; the nightly jazz show Night Train, and Crossroads, KMUW’s twice-weekly blues and R&B show. Chris is also a critic and freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, Utne, Global Rhythm, Dirty Linen, and Option, among others.
