Night Train steps aside tonight for two holiday specials from the long-running holiday series, Joy To the World. In hour one pianist Bob Thompson and his band are joined by vocalist Meredith Dean Augustin, and in hour two, the special guest is singer Kim Nalley.

Night Train marks the birthday of John Scofield with music he did as a leader, with the new Hudson ensemble, and as a special guest with Joey DeFrancesco, Mose Alison, McCoy Tyner, and Gerry Mulligan. Night Train also remembers Kansas City vocalist Kevin Mahogany throughout the week – including tonight music from both his first and last albums and a release with the Dave Stryker Organ Trio. Also new music from Van Morrison, Danny Grissett, Steve Slagle, and the Phil DeGreg Trio.

Not quite 76, but lots of trombones tonight on the Night Train – including more from Roswell Rudd, who passed away last week, with Steve Lacy and from his album Trombone for Lovers. Also trombonists Curtis Fuller, J.J. Johnson, Delfeayo Marsalis, Conrad Herwig, Wycliffe Gordon, and Steve Turre. Night Train also continues its week-long tribute to Kansas City vocalist Kevin Mahogany with music he did in the Robert Altman film Kansas City, and on his first solo album. And there’s new music from George Freeman, Eric Alexander, Vincent Herring, Chuck Owen and Gerald Beckett.

Night Train marks a number of jazz birthdays – including Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines, Michel Petrucciani, Lonnie Liston Smith, Charles Neville, Ed Thigpen, and Joe Cohn. It’s also the birthday of saxophonist and composer Ted Nash and in hour two of the show, he talks about his ambitious Presidential Suite project that took home a Grammy last year. Night Train also continues its salute to two great jazz artists who recently passed away – Kansas City singer Kevin Mahogany and trombonist Roswell Rudd. And there’s new music from organist Caesar Frazier, flutist Nestor Torres, singer Johnny O’Neal, and the Christian McBride Big Band.
