Wednesday, July 15

Global Village marks the centuries-old Mongolian festival of Naadam, a major national holiday and competition held over several days each year in July. We’ll explore traditional singing and instruments of Mongolia along with contemporary bands who fuse those traditions with a wide array of influences, from symphony orchestras to classic rock. Among the artists featured are Anda Union, Egschiglen, Hangaai, Tuvan artists Ondar and Yat-Kha, along with music from a groundbreaking compilation of throat singing, An Anthology of Mongolian Khoomii. (WHO-may)

Both Naadam and Khoomii have been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. You can find out more about Naadam here.

…and more about Khoomei including a fascinating short video about the distinctive Mongolian singing stylehere.

Thursday, July 16

Global Village marks the birthdays of reggae star Desmond Dekker, Latin artist Ruben Blades, West Coast Latin jazz pioneer Cal Tjader, and Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete. We’ll also hear music from an impressive debut album from Santa Fe Latin rock band Nohe & Sus Santos, and from groundbreaking ’60s Iranian sitarist Mehrpouya.
