Night Train begins a week-long tribute to two great jazz artists who passed away in mid-January – Brazilian trumpeter Claudio Roditi, and saxophonist, composer and arranger Jimmy Heath. Plus birthday salutes to Great American Songbook composer Jerome Kern and vibes great Bobby Hutcherson (including a special featuring in hour two of the show), and new releases from vibes player Dan McCarthy, guitarist Stephane Wrembel, and the Alex Levin Trio.
Tuesday, January 28
Night Train marks the birthday of guitarist Henry Johnson with music he did as a leader and with both Joe Williams and Norman Simmons. The weeklong tribute to two great jazz artists who passed away earlier this month also continues. We’ll hear music from tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath and trumpeter Claudio Roditi as leaders and as members of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Allstars. We’ll also hear Heath with his brothers Albert and Percy in the Heath Brothers and in a special in hour two highlighting the work of hard bop tenor greats.

We’ve got a ‘tenor battle’ tonight on the Night Train, as we feature classic and contemporary tenor sax players. Among the artists featured are Arnett Cobb, Ike Quebec, Don Braden, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Al Cohn with Zoot Sims, Scott Hamilton, and John Coltrane. And, as a special treat, Night Train also has a surprising number of jazz covers of Earth, Wind & Fire songs tonight as well.

Night Train wraps up a month long look back at the Best of 2019, and a week-long tribute to both Jimmy Heath and Claudio Roditi. Plus birthday salutes to pianist Buddy Montgomery (Wes’s brother), trumpeter Roy Eldridge, bassist and oud player Ahmed Abdul Malik (also featured tonight on Global Village), and soul jazz organist Hank Marr, and new albums from the Diva Jazz Orchestra, Church on Monday, and Carmen Souza.
