Night Train kicks off the October Latin Jazz feature with music from Eddie Palmieri’s new album, the latest from Cuban pianist and composer Harold Lopez-Nussa, and Conrad Herwig’s Latin Side projects, including a special in hour two featuring his Latin Side of Herbie Hancock performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. It’s also the birthday of bassist Dave Holland and we’ll hear him with his Quintet and in projects with Anouar Brahem, Bill Frisell, Elvin Jones, Hank Jones and Billy Higgins. And there’s also some new music from singer Amy Cervini and teenaged piano phenom Joey Alexander.

It’s contemporary jazz organ players tonight on the Night Train – including Mike LeDonne, Ben Paterson, Brian Charette, Jared Gold, Pat Bianchi, and more – and a number of NEA Jazz Masters, including 2018 honoree Pat Metheny, 2019 nominee Abdullah Ibrahim, and such previous award winners as Abbey Lincoln, Charlie Haden, Roy Haynes, and Harry ‘Sweets’ Edison.

In conjunction with the October Latin Jazz feature, Night Train highlights Afro-Cuban jazz – including the standard “Cubano Chant” and music from Kenny Dorham’s classic album, Afro-Cuban - and Cuban jazz artists – including Harold Lopez-Nussa, Alfredo Rodriguez, Ignacio Berroa and Paquito D’Rivera. Plus music from 2018 NEA Jazz Masters Dianne Reeves and Pat Metheny, new music from the Fred Hersch Trio, Karrin Allyson, Kurt Leeing, Lynne Arriale, and Mike Freeman ZonaVibe.

Night Train marks birthdays of bassist Steve Swallow (as a leader and with Carla Bley), singer Leon Thomas (with Pharoah Sanders and Louis Hayes, along with an album in tribute to him from Babatunde Lea), and blues/jazz guitarist Duke Robillard (who is the featured artist throughout October on Crossroads). The show also continues the October Night Train Latin Jazz feature with music from Wayne Wallace, Ken Wiley, and Cal Tjader with Anita O’Day – and there’s new music from Radam Schwartz, Nick Finzer, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra.
