A special edition of Night Train to celebrate the birthday of one of the great poets of the jazz piano - Tommy Flanagan. We’ll hear music from his early days in Detroit through his later acclaimed work as a leader, including a performance done to mark his Jazzpar Prize and one of his Grammy-nominated recordings. Flanagan also had a prolific early career as a sideman and we’ll hear him with Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, and, in his most famous sideman role of all – as pianist and musical director for Ella Fitzgerald. Hour two of the show features a Jazz Profiles special documenting Flanagan’s life and career.

Night Train marks birthdays of pianists Jessica Williams and Nat ‘King’ Cole (including a special in hour two showcasing the peak years of the Trio, just as Cole was about to emerge as a major star). Night Train also continues the March Women’s History Month feature with selections from Latin jazz violinist Susie Hansen and pianist Lara Driscoll. And the latest releases from Walter White, Louden Wainwright III, and the Russell Ferrante Trio.

Night Train continues the Women’s History Month feature with music from organist Akiko Tsuruga and Kansas City singer Angela Hagenbach; marks birthdays of steel drum player Andy Narell, vibes player Joe Locke, and guitarist Bill Frisell (with his latest album and in a Savannah Music Festival concert special in hour two); and highlights new albums from guitarists Roni Ben-Hur and Steve Cardenas.
